WHAT IS NEXT IN MY PHOTOGRAPHY JOURNEY

As I continue to grow in my photography journey, I’m more captivated than ever by the beauty of real, unscripted moments. My focus is on creating authentic, candid interactions between families, children, and their surroundings, embracing the delightful chaos that comes with it. It’s about letting people be themselves, free from the constraints of picture-perfect poses, and capturing those genuine connections that tell a true, heartfelt story.
Storytelling has always been at the heart of my work, but it didn’t start that way. When I first began, my sessions were much more structured. I followed a formula, directing every pose and detail, hoping to create that ideal family portrait. While those images were beautiful, they lacked the soul and spontaneity that I wanted to convey.
I often think back to the early lessons I learned from my Auntie Nelly, who had a gift for capturing the essence of our family gatherings with her camera. She didn’t pose us or ask for smiles; she just let the moments unfold naturally. Watching her capture those unfiltered, genuine moments of our family laughing, sharing stories, and simply being together sparked something in me. I realized that storytelling in photography is about more than just the image; it’s about capturing the emotion and narrative of the moment.
Over the years, I’ve developed a new formula for storytelling in my photography. It’s a blend of observation, intuition, and trust. I’ve learned to step back, to watch, and to wait for those real moments of connection and emotion. This approach has transformed my work and allowed me to capture images that resonate deeply with the families I photograph.
One of the key lessons I’ve learned is that families want images that reflect their true selves. They don’t want to see a posed version of their life; they want to see the joy, the love, the little quirks and moments that make them unique. That’s what I aim to capture. This shift was reinforced by the work of photographers like Annie Nelson and Joy Prouty, who excel at capturing the raw, beautiful realities of family life. Annie’s ability to find beauty in everyday interactions and Joy’s knack for capturing the essence of family life inspire me to push my own boundaries and delve deeper into the art of storytelling.
Kirsten Lewis has also been a significant influence in this evolution. Her “Day in the Life” sessions show the beauty of real, unfiltered family moments, capturing everything from the mundane to the magical. There’s an honesty in her work that resonates with me, and it has encouraged me to embrace the imperfections and unpredictability of family life. I’m currently taking a course by Annie Nelson, exploring her approach to storytelling photography and learning how to capture those subtle, often overlooked moments that make her work so impactful. It’s been an incredible experience, opening my eyes to new techniques and perspectives that I can’t wait to integrate into my own work.
But I’m not stopping there. I’m eager to learn from other inspiring photographers like Joy Prouty and Kirsten Lewis, whose ability to connect with their subjects on such a personal level is something I deeply admire. I want to understand their creative processes, how they build trust with their clients, and how they tell such powerful, emotional stories through their images.
Each photographer brings something unique to the table, and by learning from them, I hope to continue evolving my own storytelling style. It’s not just about taking better photos; it’s about creating images that feel like memories, that capture the essence of a family’s life in a way that’s honest, beautiful, and deeply personal.
